Summary
In Madagascar, population growth, dependence on charcoal for cooking and inefficient charcoal conversion leads to non-sustainable harvesting of native trees. Conservation requires improved methods of charcoal production and alternative sources of wood. This model project shows how this can be achieved within the landscape of Pointe-à-Larrée by enabling locals to adopt improved charcoal production methods (from Benin), by developing and supporting value chains from innovative products (green charcoal and wood vinegar), and by exploiting the invasive pyrophilic alien Melaleuca quinquenervia.
