Vultures, Cows and People – strengthening an ancient relationship

Summary
This project pilots an approach connecting vulture population restoration with improved livelihoods for farmers whilst addressing the problem of feral cattle in and around Shuklaphanta National Park in Nepal. Vultures need safe food and mostly feed on dead livestock. Cattle provide a key source of income - but pose challenges when unproductive due to their religious significance. By establishing vulture-friendly dairy livelihoods and making shelters for abandoned cattle financially viable, an improved co-existence for vultures and communities can be achieved.
