Summary
The primary economic activity in San Lorenzo Bay, Honduras is artisanal salt production. Increasingly climate change effects are impacting salt production and the availability of habitats for shorebirds of conservation concern, resulting in increased poverty and emigration, and declining shorebird populations. Expanding the productive areas of farms without reducing natural habitats, combined with measures to increase resilience to storms, will increase both production and shorebird habitats while generating new employment opportunities. Impactful communications will help scale-up approaches in other areas.
