Summary
Only 13,530 Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii) remain in the wild, and PanEco and partners are establishing a new, genetically-viable population in Jantho Nature Reserve. Jantho's biodiversity is threatened by illegal activities, and COVID-19-related shocks to local livelihoods further heighten risk. This project will reintroduce a further 24 orangutans into Jantho, implement protection through SMART patrols, work with 6 forest-adjacent communities to establish honey cooperatives, and raise environmental wareness to holistically alleviate poverty, reduce threats and protect critical biodiversity.
An innovative approach to agriculture in Madagascar enables communities to build climate-adaptive food systems while reducing pressure on biodiversity.
