Purpose: To assist the Mongolian authorities in meeting the urgent need to implement effective management of the large mammal resource in the KKSPA and buffer zone through the conduct of research to provide credible scientific data that can be used to develop a sustainable wildlife management policy that will enable both conservation and community development. The project will increase the Mongolian research community’s ability to sustain the research and raise awareness of sustainable resource use by involving key stakeholders from local communities such as Soum (local government unit), Park Environment Officers and members of the buffer zone management committee
Outputs: Training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in large mammal conservation ecology Report describing the resource and the statutory powers for park protection and community empowerment in natural resource management Scientific publications on the offtake from the KKSPA & buffer zone and sale of large mammal products in the Ulaanbaatar market; on the distribution of large mammals in the KKSPA & buffer zone in relation to human activitiesWorkshops on the options for the sustainable use of large mammals in the KKSPA & buffer zone; survey design, data analysis, and biodiversity monitoring; on alternative approaches to large mammal utilisation and conservation in the KKSPA & buffer zone
