Upgrading and broadening the new South-Pacific International Coconut Genebank
Host Country Institutions:
DESCRIPTION: Papua New Guinea’s Pacific International Coconut Genebank is jeopardised by lethal yellowing. Genebank transfer to a safe place in PNG and to new sites in Fiji and Samoa will safeguard existing and new accessions. Most-endangered zones will be explored for cultivars, and scientists trained in their conservation.
PURPOSE: Against climate change and other threats, work will build capacity, safeguard critical coconut germplasm, and boost its wider use, ensuring a stable future for coconut breeding and coconut-based livelihoods
